(1838-1902)
Polish Hebrew writer, editor and translator. He was born in Grodno, Belorussia, and after wandering from town to town in southern Russia returned to his native city in 1858. After the pogroms of 1881 he joined the Hibbat Zion movement. In 1886 he went to Warsaw, where he was an editor of the first Hebrew encyclopaedia, Ha-Eshkol. His Memoirs of the House of David is a series of stories embracing Jewish history from the destruction of the Temple to the beginning of the Haskalah period in Germany.
